Reading a post of a young couple that remodeled the house they bought, I started thinking on the things that make a good contractor:
- Detail oriented
- works without interruption
- doesn’t complain
- doesn’t ask a million questions
- efficient.
How to choose?
Some were recommended to us by existing (trusted) service providers, and others were suggested via sites like ServiceMagic. Results, thus far, have been both good and bad.
Recommendations are always good, if someone you know and trust has worked with this contractor and recommend, the chances are you would enjoy working with him too.
Sites, especially these sites that include recommendations and rating of contractors by other people are also an option.
The thing to remember is that there are no guarantees. Even if you are extremely careful and take only highly recommended contractors you might encounter at least one that is going to give you some hard time.
After all the “crises”, the highs and the downs, you would probably end with a beautiful home. Just safeguard yourself against the disappearance of a contractor by saving the big payment to the end or middle of the work.
