clutter

In our materialistic culture, clutter seems to be unavoidable.
Every member of the family has at lease keys, a cell phone, a bag and sunglasses or if they are really young like in my case - a pacifier, a bottle, blanket….that as soon as we walk in the door are deposited imedietly on the pile of clutter already waiting on the kitchen table or hall stand.

During the time we spend at home, little piles of clutter travel from one point to another and by the end of the day it is quite possible to get lost in the clutter.

Adrian from 2mordern did a great post on waging war against clutter. here are several of her Ideas:

Entryway: Install a system of shelves/ cubbie/ baskets designated separately to each member of the family in which all removable belongings will be deposited upon entry to the house, and will be easily found upon leaving.

Mail and Things-to-do that offten clutter our kitchen and dining room should be put in the home office if you have one and if not - a draw should be designated for this manner items or filling cabinet should be put in the kitchen with a to do draw as well as a done draw.

Living room: remote controls should have a specific basket where they are always put (you might need to train the family) and CD’s and DVD can be arranged in binders made for this purpose with out there covers. It is much neater and saves loads of shelf space.

Also - place a big clutter basket at the step of the stairs or hallway, for all kinds of clutter - shoes, homework toys and so on, and on the way out of the living room, family members can pick up there clutter and put it away.
(I am going to get a really large Clutter Basket)

Invest in the bedroom closets and storing space!!! make sure that everything has a place lots of hangers little baskets and draw / shelve dividers make life a lot more tidy.

last but not least - if you are lucky enough to have a basment, store room atic or garage - shelve it well, use plastic storage containers, to sort the different items - finding things will be a lot faster than digging through piles of stuff, and most probably your things will last longer and be in good condition when you need them.

a great resource for ideas on decluttering

I bookmarked this page and will probably refer to it in my endless war against clutter.

Oh, and one very last thing: GET RID OF THINGS YOU DON’T NEED, USE, LIKE.

No doubt - a mess in the room will ruin the most elegant design.

A good layout is crucial to keeping your home or work environment clutter free. Make sure you don’t overwhelm a small room with large furniture, or other big objects.
