What is the recommended overhang amount for a kitchen countertop that will be used for barstool-type seating? That is, how many inches of knee/leg space should be provided?

Thanks Howard (replace DEE with the letter d to reply personally)

The industry standard for seat cushion height to the top of the table, counter or bar is 12'. Standard table height is 32' therefor seat cushion height is 20'. Standard counter height is 36' therefor seat cushion height is 24' Standard bar height is 42' therefor seat cushion height is 30'

From the wording of your question, I am not sure if you mean to ask the recommended height of the stools to be used, as someone already responded to, or how much the countertop should extend from the base cabinetry.

The countertop should extend 12' to 15' beyond the base cabinet for an eating counter, however, if the question was in regards to a bar (where only drinks would be served) as little as 6' would be sufficient, and a 'breakfast counter' could be made somewhere in between, at approximately 10'.
