I'm relatively new to the construction industry and am trying to come up to speed quickly. I understand that increasingly, exterior and interior components in office buildings are prefabricated. I'm told that utilizing prefabricated components adds flexibility and reduces cost for a job. In order to convince my boss (and his)that we should take a serious look, I'm trying to find a definitive source(s) on the subject so I can build a case.

Anyone knowledgeable in this area?

Thanks Bob K.

Which components?

I don't see much pre-fab of items that are traditionally site built. In fact, the demountable partitions that were popular in the 60's and 70's are becoming quite rare.

Bob...

First you should probably go to one of the 'construction' newsgroups for additional help... I think there is one called 'alt.building.construction' or something...google can help.

Second...maybe I misunderstand what you're asking, but many components in commercial construction are pre-fabricated, at least here in the US. ..So perhaps it would help if you told us a bit more about you, the project and your boss. I have to assume that the boss is not in the construction industry...or at least does not have much experience with commercial work, or there would be no reason for you to try to convince him to use the industry standards!

For exteriors of mid-to-high-rise builidngs it is very common to use factory-fabricated wall panels, curtain wall systems, etc. For interior work there is usually a higher level of built-on-site items, although some items come pre-built from a factory.

Perhaps a bit more info?
