Most of our home is decorated in a traditional way, but I want to do a modern kitchen with granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances and modern sleek cabinets. I am wondering if that would be a bad design decision since the rest of the house is more traditional?

There are people and designers who would love the idea of such a contrast. Not me. I think a kitchen as you described will be completely unrelated to the house. I think it can work if you choose not to go for the complete modern look. The the things you like the most of the modern style and to it accessories and ornaments that are more traditional. This can help connecting both styles to something that is working design wise.
