I am fascinated with the notion of having a 'minimalist' interior to live in, however I am wondering how one can live successfully with a few key pieces as opposed to the regular 'set' of furnishings normally associated with everyday living. Is this a mindset I have to first conquer, or should I just go in and get rid of everything and do it?

Yes, I'd say it is a mind set. It is the simplification of lifestyle, but in a sophisticated manner. It is not necessarilly about getting rid of everthing, but finding an appropriate place for those things that are worth displaying. Just think of all of the objects in your home that are not even used, or appreciated for their true value. Could you survive without them? Remember:
Less is More
Quality vs Quantity
There is no need to get rid of the typical furniture that is used for 'everyday living' The goal is to re-think the little things that clutter your home. Concentrate on the overall form without too much focus on the detail.
Minimalism also makes cleaning a whole lot easier! Good Luck!!

P.s Do not compensate comfort for minimal appeal, remember that you do still need to live in your home, and feel comfortable.

Deschern,
i'm sorry but i do not know what level of design u are at. but from a 'layman' point of view. If it ( interior elements eg. furnishings...floor pattern...) hold no significant function then why is it still there and if u are afraid that the interior might look bare ( empty ) .... then u should look into lightings. lightings can help define a space. It can create a define a space within a space and can also be used to create visual interest with different colours lights, different intensity.........
maybe u would like to look at works by tada undo.
Regards, MAC
