My wife has been attending a local private 4 year college studying interior design. The school doesn't have FIDER accreditation because it's a fairly small school and doesn't have the type of budget that would allow them to meet all the standards.

My question is, how badly will it hurt her career, having a degree from a non-FIDER accredited school?

Also, what are typical state licensing requirements? I know that the NCIDQ is required, but do some states also require a degree from a FIDER accredited school?

Thanks in advance for the help! Bart Yount

In Florida, FIDER and NCIDQ are required. Check this link for some general info - http://www.bdf2001.com/articles/interior-design.html

There is a trend nationwide to require NCIDQ certification in order to aquire a state license. Since FIDER accreditation is required for NCIDQ, your wife's situation could be tricky.

More states are beginning to license interior designers as design professionals, such as architects and engineers. I their cases, licensure is critical, and I anticipate that it will become critical to interior design.

Check out www.asid.org for more information on licensure. I'm sure that they have information there.
