I love Greene & Greene also, and Maybeck, too! The Maybeck chapel in Berkeley is a light, lovely, spiritual haven that has nothing dark and gloomy about it. (I used to live a few blocks down the street from it on Dwight Way, and that's when I began to study the A&C movement.)
Perhaps in Scotland and the UK-affiliated lands, but not in California. The fabulous whimsy and attention to detail create a lot of light and shadow play, and the use of mid-tone woods is also 'light'.
I would attribute this to the entire San Francisco Bay A&C movement, no? did you catch the recent special on TV about the folks who bought and restored a fabulous G&G house in Pasadena, and how they found all kinds of original light fixtures and other accessories in the basement? The home is stunning, absolutely a treasure of warm woods, sweet brass, intricate details and timeless beauty.
