Hello,,,,I am building a home over the next year and am considering cork for some of the flooring in the house. I have a piano, and currently my piano sits on carpet. For those of you who do not know, what your piano sits on, i.e. tile/carpet/wood, etc makes a difference in the sound of your piano. Does anyone have any knowledge of people who have put a piano on cork flooring and what acoustic or other effects it had on their music making? My piano is on carpet and has a 'warm' sound, while a friend with the exact piano/tuned by the same technician has hers on tile and it is much 'brighter' sounding. Anyway, anyone with any ideas or insight as to how cork flooring might influence the sound, I would appreciate your opinions. Thank you, Eric

hi...

just a thought...If your piano is in a room where your sound is 'absorb' say in a carpeted room then it might gives off a different sound compared to room with tiles. Since tiles are not 'acoustically absorbent' then you would get more of an echo when you play the piano. I think this is the same reason why people tend to have a 'better' singing voice in the bathroom because of the reverberation and echo. If I remember right...music is heard better when you have echo. Cork flooring I think is an acoustic absorptive material. However, that does not necessarily mean you can't make beautiful music. You might want to consider the treatment and finishes of you walls and ceilings as well.
