1950s &60s Kitchens(The New Kitchen of Tomorrow Today)

I thought this was lovely. The future is still where we are aiming for some 50 years later, and will probably still be trying to get there 50 years from now.

Its interesting to see where our modern built in kitchens came from, as Pam from Retro Renovation says

it wasn’t until the post-war period that the idea of “fitted kitchens” - with built-in cabinetry, long uninterrupted counter tops, and integrated stoves and fridges - all based on “scientific, efficient, step saving” (and “wife saving”) layouts - really took hold. It’s so interesting: As a nation we are such believers in technology… science… progress.

Some thing that got my attention:

  • I love the way Mary, from the first video picks up here leg when kissing her husband in kitchenous joy.
  • The need to move forward into the future while holding on to the warm and familiar family feel in the kitchen is fascinating to me - on the one hand the makers of the film pretty much discarded the “old ways” and on the other hand - held onto it tightly.
  • One last thing -charcoal grill into the counter top is not something I would want in my kitchen, especially taking into account that at the time he would cook (if you were lucky) and she would have to deal with the mess charcoal would leave in the kitchen.
