Hmmm... Front Page 3 Okay, got that off my chest. Why oh why the jpgs? What's wrong with gifs? The jpgs look naff. What's with the font too? Looks crap on my screen. Oh, that's cos it is! Who the hell has Charter BT (apart from me that is... must get rid of it, it's awful)? No idea what's going on with the HTML... perhaps A8 can do that one.

(assume you came here looking for a crit anyway... that's what we do here.

Have you actually looked at this page, besides the crappy looking over compressed buttons, the linked pages don't even have a background color to blend the images into.

Now we all know what 'affordable web page designing' is. Must relax a bit and bring my prices down

Is there any point tho' in taking the mick out of this? (I'm new to NGs...what do you call it? 'flaming' 'dissing' - somebody please explain these). Judging by the list these guys sent this to I doubt whether they'd read any of this. After all, they must be so busy designing...

But please, do, fill me in on something that's been bugging me lately. I came to web designing from a magazine design background. Bunging a copy of Quark on a mac never made anyone any good at print design, so how come on the web so many people can grab a copy of Dreamweaver or FrontPage and set up as designers?

Other than the computer (desktop publishing) revolution, I think a partial answer to this question is simply that it costs next to nothing to publish on the internet... there's no monitary barrier standing in anyones way. If Service Beaureau's ever started charging $19.95 a month for everything you ever wanted printed I'm sure there'd be a ton of new people trying to make a go at print design too. This doesn't delve into the reason why someone might think they're a 'professional' at anything right out of the starting gate though... to consider the reasons behind the psychology of it all we'd probably have to start alt.psychology.graphics and explore everything from software company's marketing strategies to narcissism. Just some thoughts.

Oh, I totally agree! I claim to be a graphic designer, and I am...for the web I was one of those who grabbed a copy of Photoshop and through trial and error has become better and better (my latest creation http://www.realitynetworks.com). I am still not earning the big bucks, mostly because I am not working that much after the birth of my baby But I am getting there. So in a sense I am prof b/c I get paid, but I a far from where I wanna be. It takes practise...and print is something I want to learn, but has not yet had a chance - and yes, because of the cost we don't all go out and print up magazines just to 'try it out'....I will work on a brochure for myself and see where it gets me....

My URL is http://www.sabramdesign.com but is has not been updated for ages...it will get a total makeover when I finish my two current contracts....

Now your sites on the other hand are very well done, your trial and error has paid off well. If I was in the market, I'd hire you... Kerry

IJIAYGA.... . .

As long as you make enough to break-even (plus a little profit), then that's one method of getting more work.

No, these people see the NG's as easy targets.

They can't. I've yet to see a plug-in for any of the above that does the marketing of the sites they design. A site does not a presence make, and the same rules apply to design on the net, as it does to print.

he's got all kinds of secret k-rad h4x0r codes that i can never figure out. - if they aren't listed at whatis.com, then i tend to just brush over them.

....but with 11 clients currently going, i can't say i blame him, heh.
